Author's note: In the spring of 2016, I went to East Jerusalem and the West Bank with plans to write about the Shuafat Refugee Camp in East Jerusalem. My tour was an extensive ten days, which I spent witnessing various aspects of the Israeli military occupation and talking to many different kinds of people. Back home, I sat down and wrote out an account of what I'd seen and learned.
